Challenge
The database and controlling department of an internationally active NPO evaluates, among other things, the impact of mailings (post/e-mail) to existing contacts with regard to the donation activities attributable to them. When generating and preparing this information as an HTML or PDF report, the organization relied on a heterogeneous tool landscape consisting of MS Office products and the proprietary analysis software SPSS®.
Goal
Data management, analysis, reporting and graphic creation: The NPO would like to replace the existing toolset with the introduction of a holistic solution in order to optimize work processes and expand functionality.
Solution
As it met all the requirements, the customer decided to switch to the free data science language R. eoda paved the way for the development of R's potential. In doing so, eoda supported its customer both with the programming of the corresponding analysis script and with coaching to build up its own expertise in the use of R. The R script provided fulfills the individual framework conditions with regard to the formatting of the resulting reports and at the same time automates recurring tasks such as data preparation.
This is made possible by the extension packages available for R with methods for almost every application scenario, which replace the previously used software components and add features such as exporting results to MS Word and PowerPoint.
Result
With the combination of the unique functional scope of the free programming language and the knowledge of the R specialist eoda, the organization was able to raise its statistical evaluations to a higher level. The responsible employees on the customer side benefit from a user-friendly and consistent solution with significantly expanded analytical possibilities and customized reporting with consistently high quality. Another advantage is that by using an open source language, the NPO has the opportunity to save on existing license costs in the future.
Due to the high level of satisfaction, the organization plans to use R beyond the described use case. As part of a proof of concept, eoda developed a model for the non-profit organization that predicts the probability of a donation with regard to influencing factors such as past donations or the timing of a mailing.
