Challenge
In the fast-paced clinical routine, the DHZC needs central KPIs to be available as easily and quickly as possible
Goal
Professionalization of monitoring central KPIs through interactive applications and dashboards in R Shiny
Solution
Further development and creation of new R Shiny apps, as well as knowledge building for independent app development
Challenge
How is the utilization of operating rooms and laboratories developing? What types of procedures are performed, and how often? The German Heart Center of Charité aims to further professionalize its monitoring in order to access key KPIs of everyday clinical operations more efficiently and easily.
To this end, the DHZC relies on the R framework Shiny for the development of interactive applications and dashboards, and already operates two applications for monitoring cardiac catheterization labs and operating rooms. These applications run on the new data infrastructure built around the Posit solutions.
Goal
The DHZC’s goal is to further expand monitoring and to make information even easier and more intuitive to access in the future. To achieve this, the existing Shiny applications are to be taken to a higher technical and methodological level, additional applications for other use cases are to be developed, and internal know-how is to be built up to enable the independent development and further enhancement of applications.
Solution
In the first step, eoda’s experts analyzed the two existing Shiny applications with regard to the DHZC’s requirements and the current state of technology. To improve usability as well as scalability and maintainability, eoda technically rebuilt both applications. Key aspects included modularization to simplify future enhancements and optimized data handling to make relevant information from databases available in the applications even faster.
In addition, eoda developed new Shiny applications for other areas of everyday clinical practice—for example, an application that facilitates meetings by centrally preparing information on all procedures to be presented.
The third pillar of the collaboration is knowledge building. Through close cooperation, eoda transferred the skills required to develop user-friendly Shiny applications to Charité staff and provided concrete solution approaches through pair programming sessions.
Result
User-friendly and insightful applications and dashboards form the bridge between data and users—also for the DHZC. eoda strategically strengthened this bridge for the DHZC, ranging from the redevelopment and enhancement of applications to the setup and operation of a high-performance and reliable data infrastructure.
As a result, the DHZC now has modern dashboards and an infrastructure that help to capture information more quickly and derive the right actions—both today and in the future. With eoda’s empowerment approach, the DHZC is well positioned to independently further develop existing applications or create new ones going forward.
“Development, deployment, and operations: with its expertise and experience, the eoda team covers the entire data science process.
Working with eoda therefore moves us forward decisively on many levels and is a great pleasure for us.”
